CHARACTER NAME: Siegfried Mirthorne, the Kindred Scholar
CANON: Original Character, Nightsteel Verse
CANON POINT: On the eve of summoning Zzavaraqk, the Twelfth Saint of Devils.
POWERS:
- Infernal Sense: He is capable of detecting infernal energy when present in the atmosphere and in others. It causes a burning sensation behind his ears.
TOKEN: a bloodsteel dagger, a picture of his daughter, and a rosary beaded with oily black and silver pearls.Siegfried is a demonologist from Bloodwych who dedicated his life to his craft. He was born into a lower noble class with a strict and humble upbringing. As a child, he survived the Black Shivers which left him with a permanently withered left leg. The plague took his younger sister; something his mother never forgave him for. This set a determination and a curiosity-driven towards understanding and curing infernal plagues. He walked the steps of enlightenment as a youth and joined the sacred clergy. There, he studied ancient and infernal powers, the origin of devils, and their history of ravaging his people's lands. His order sought to hunt the devils that grow from corruption and release their grip on the world that has kept mankind from reaching its true potential.
For decades, he led a righteous and scholarly pursuit of life, truly believing in the necessary evils as being a key to release from multi-generational damnation. Though he never married, he adopted an acolyte named Miriam, whom he loved like a daughter. He took her under his wing in their mutual pursuit of knowledge and justice. On their pursuit for origin of the cataclysm that started the first blight, a new wave of rot was unleashed. As a result, Miriam succumbed to the corruption, sending Siegfried into a tailspin of delving into deeper and darker magics in a desperate attempt to stop an apocalyptic level event from growing. As his lands succumb to ruin, the scholar resorts to summoning a great devil in a pact that would sacrifice himself if it meant putting an end to the blight he'd started.
His primary values circle around knowledge, justice, and perseverance. He's dedicated his life to his pursuit of knowledge and justice in a sacrificial manner to find the end to the turmoil of his home state. Despite his setbacks, he pushes forward no matter the cost trying to make a world better for all. His view of piety is reflected upon the determination of others and their underlying motivations. Those who contain values that differ from his are looked upon as tragic, if not repugnant, and perhaps needing to be saved or let life be their crucible of punishment that put them on the right path.
The pursuit of ultimate knowledge, he wants to be all-knowing so that he may become the savior of his people. A master of the devils where the predecessors of his order has failed. He will do anything to achieve such goals and pursuits, including undercutting others and risking their lives if he believes it to be for the greater good.
He's amoral in the way that likes to put intention above action; if the cause is good, the ends may justify the means. He has a fanatical thirst for knowledge, which gives him a bit of tunnel vision when pursuing something that might be of use or interest to him. This leaves him to be insensitive and direct, putting others in danger without realizing. He can be arrogant and deluded in his own capabilities, finding himself morally and intellectually superior compared to most others. He is impatient, opinionated, and stubborn and incapable of resisting the sirens call to a good mystery.
His biggest fear is the loss of his mind, slipping into a corruptible nature, and failing to achieve his goals. His mind is his weapon and without it he is lost. Falling to madness, losing his sense of himself and his surroundings, and succumbing to the darkness within. He avoids substances that might alter his mind and always tries to keep his wits about him. He hinges on his faith to help guide him in times of uncertainty. When he feels himself slipping, he becomes erratic and will give himself pep talks to rationale a way to his head on straight. When fully panicked, he will begin to pray....to anyone or anything capable of playing the role of savior to him in that moment. Gods or devils.
Black substance sheens like oil slick that is sticky and acidic, crying statues, burning pyres, church bells and lamenting chants, the smells of sulphur/burnt flesh/sweet sickly rot, dead trees and foliage, doves, braided black hair.
Siegfried's servitor is a manifestation of all his internalized guilt to those he has lost in his pursuit and those he could not save. The repressed desire to purge himself of these negative thoughts so that he may finally feel peace, but knowing he is undeserving of reaching such an epiphany until his work is done to make right for what he has done wrong.
Description: The mournskin is a large chimera like creature with three faces in a triple-deity like manner cloaked in a black tattered coif that is crowned with a wooden circlet strung with black and silver pearls. The center face is Siegfried's face, with the faces of two women on either side (Miriam and Bernadette). It's body is about as large as an elephants with corrupted and grotesque proportions like a body that has grown rapidly in a short period of time. It wears the rags of a priest's habit and walks on all fours with a slight limp, trampling forward with its knuckles dragging against the ground and uses all three sets of eyes to see and seek out its prey.
Behavior: The Mournskin feeds off guilt and hysteria, seeking those who carry the burden of wronging others. It wants victims to confess their sins so that it can absolve them from it and provide them absolution from the weight they have been carrying.
Abilities: Each face possesses a unique ability.
- Truth speak: Bernadette's face, when activated, compels those who look her in the eye to spill all their secrets.
- Plague touch: Miriam's face, when activated, produces a black corrosive substance from her mouth. When in contact with this substance, victims begin to go mad and hallucinate they are going through a religious epiphany: speaking in tongues, euphoria, self-flagellation.
- Thought siphoning: Siegfried's face, when activated, sticks his long tongue into the victim's ear to basically give them a mind-meld. He takes all their thoughts and memories, leaving the victim a shell of their former selves. The mournskin holds onto all the thoughts it has siphoned until it's killed, to which any victims will be finally restored their personhood.
Weaknesses: Siegfried's servitor cannot stand the sight of its own reflection and will cry out in anguish and despair, running in the opposite direction when confronted with itself.
